GENERATOR Series: The State You’re In
Category: Generator Series • KANEKO Core Programs • Members • Performances | Season: Influence
Nebraska-Based Creators
The KANEKO Generator Series returns with its first event of 2020, “The State You’re In,” which will explore the music and art of Nebraska-based creators. This will be a program that asks questions: What is unique about living in Nebraska? How can we characterize our state beyond the catchy slogans and branding campaigns? What does Nebraska sound like? Is there a specific acoustic character to our state? Where are we shaped as listeners and creators by the sonic qualities of the Great Plains?
The State You’re In features a world premiere by composer Stacey Barelos which weaves narrative reflections from the community with string quartet, as well as music composed by composers Mathew Fuerst, Dana Murray, and Anothony Donofrio, poetry by Amanda DeBoer Bartlett, and a special art installation by Susan Knight.
About the Generator Series: Presented by KANEKO and Omaha Under the Radar, the Generator Series will present events that investigate music’s relationship to our physical world, seeking the connections between sound and architecture, sound and natural landscapes, sound, and the human body, and more. Focusing on music by living composers, including sound improvisation and experimental composition, the Generator Series will be an outlet for non-commercial music that asks questions about how we listen and how we interact with sound in the 21st century.

PASSAGES: In Praise of Wasting Time
Category: Free • KANEKO Core Programs • Lectures • Passages | Season: Influence
The value of wasting time.
The KANEKO, along with the University of Nebraska Omaha, welcomes distinguished physicist and bestselling author Alan Lightman for the spring session of our PASSAGES Literary Series.
Discussion will center around the ‘art’ of wasting time. A description of Lightman’s recent book In Praise of Wasting Time includes the themes for the evening:
We are all worried about wasting time. Especially in the West, we have created a frenzied lifestyle in which the twenty-four hours of each day are carved up, dissected, and reduce down to ten-minute units of efficiency. We take our iPhones and laptops with us on vacation. We check email at restaurants or our brokerage accounts while walking in the park. When the school day ends, our children are overloaded with “extras.” Our university curricula are so crammed our young people don’t have time to reflect on the material they are supposed to be learning. Yet in the face of our time-driven existence, a great deal of evidence suggests there is great value in “wasting time,” of letting the mind lie fallow for some periods, of letting minutes and even hours go by without scheduled activities or intended tasks.
Doors open at 6:30; please join us early to write down your questions for Lightman. A special addition to the program, internationally recognized fiddler Bonnie Rideout will begin the evening with an informal concert in connection with her creative process of ‘wasting time’.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
About Alan Lightman: “A scientist who is a humanist in the noblest sense of the word.” – Los Angeles Times
After serving on the faculty of Harvard University for a dozen years, Alan Lightman moved to MIT, where he became the first person to receive a dual faculty appointment in the sciences and the humanities. In astrophysics, Lightman has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of black holes, radiation processes at the center of galaxies, and the foundation of Einstein’s theory of gravity.
Dozens of independent theatrical and musical production worldwide have been adapted from Lightman’s novel Einstein Dreams. An international bestseller, this book is one of the most widely used texts in universities today and has been translated into 30 languages. A prolific author, Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine, 2018, and the novel Three Flames, 2019.
Lightman’s appearance at KANEKO PASSAGES, which includes a discussion with expert panelists and the audience, will center around his book In Praise of Wasting Time, which was released in 2018.

GREAT MINDS Lecture Series: Phil Hansen
Category: Education • Great Minds Series • KANEKO Core Programs • Lectures | Season: Re•Purpose
Embrace the Shake
How can physical limitations drive creativity and innovation?
Taking on the idea of Re•Purpose in a new and innovative way, KANEKO and Applied Underwriters, Omaha’s premier employer invite you to join in an evening of creative discussion and interactive art-making with internationally recognized multimedia artist Phil Hansen.
As an art student, Hansen’s intense style of pointillism led to a tremor in his hand and a diagnosis of nerve damage. Devastated, he discontinued his pursuit of art, until a neurologist suggested he “embrace the shake.” That piece of advice sent Phil on a quest to invent different approaches to making art by embracing personal and universal limitations.
Working with a broad array of mediums such as vinyl records, tree branches, and chocolate chips, Hansen has re-invented what pointillism is within his creative process and offers an inspirational and unique perspective on the re-purposing of material and thought all in one.
Hansen has spoken at TEDTalk 2013 Conference and the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, and has been featured on PBS, BBC, CNN, and the Discovery Channel. Phil was the official artist for 51st Grammy Awards and has had works commissioned by Disney, The Rockefeller Foundation, Skype, Mazda, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. His work is now on exhibit at KANEKO through August 24, 2019.
About Phil Hansen: Phil Hansen is an internationally recognized multimedia artist, speaker, author, and innovator known for crashing irreverently through conventional boundaries. He is widely known for his videos that document the creative process showing millions that art is action, not just result, and that restrictions can spur innovation rather than constrain it. Hansen is the founder of Goodbye Art Academy, providing high quality and free art education videos to teachers and students everywhere. For more information, please visit Philinthecircle.com.

MOVEMENT Series: mode of being
Category: KANEKO Core Programs • Members • MOVEMENT • Performances | Season: Human Condition
An examination of the shared elements of human nature.
As part of The Movement Series, tbd. dance collective presents mode of being, an evening length production examining the shared elements of human nature. Through movement, dancers will explore the external behaviors, rituals, and patterns we engage in on a daily basis, as well as the internal ability we have to experience life through a range of emotions. These shared acts of humanity are widely varied, but can overlap and intersect – connecting us in ways that can be easily seen, and other times only felt. Mode of being will feature a live, original score, created in direct conversation with the choreography and exhibition.
The performance will take place in galleries on both the second and main floors. The first half of the performance will be upstairs, with standing room only. Audience members will then be asked to move from the second floor, to the main floor. If special assistance, or an elevator is needed, please communicate with KANEKO staff prior to the performance. Seating for the second half is on the main floor. The movement has been specifically designed for the seating arrangement, and visibility will be different depending on where you sit. You will have a unique perspective of the show, no matter where you are seated. Arriving early to select your seat is highly encouraged.
Limited tickets are available for these performances. Once tickets are sold out, there will not be a waitlist or ticket resale. Seating is on a first come, first serve basis.
