Madama Butterfly: The Suicide that Stays News
KANEKO and Applied Underwriters, Inc. are proud to present the 2019 GREAT MINDS Lecture Series, where the brightest thinkers address topics with fresh, provocative perspectives.
Art has always had the power to spur social controversy, change political and social views, heighten public awareness, and ultimately change perceptions and sensibilities in matters of social impact. Puccini’s masterpiece, Madama Butterfly, was no different when it premiered in 1904 and as it continues to play today in theaters around the world.
For this lecture, you will be exposed to stellar performances of excerpts from Madama Butterfly, followed by a leadership panel who will discuss the artwork and its social implications. The panel will be led by Dr. Bette Talvacchia, Emerita Professor of Art History, and Jenny Rroji, Art Director and Pianist.
A special feature of Jun Kaneko’s brilliant stage and costume design work for Madama Butterfly will be on display during the presentation.
Featuring Emerita Professor of Art History and Great Minds lecturer: Dr. Bette Talvacchia

GREAT MINDS Lecture Series: Phil Hansen

Embrace the Shake
How can physical limitations drive creativity and innovation?
Taking on the idea of Re•Purpose in a new and innovative way, KANEKO and Applied Underwriters, Omaha’s premier employer invite you to join in an evening of creative discussion and interactive art-making with internationally recognized multimedia artist Phil Hansen.
As an art student, Hansen’s intense style of pointillism led to a tremor in his hand and a diagnosis of nerve damage. Devastated, he discontinued his pursuit of art, until a neurologist suggested he “embrace the shake.” That piece of advice sent Phil on a quest to invent different approaches to making art by embracing personal and universal limitations.
Working with a broad array of mediums such as vinyl records, tree branches, and chocolate chips, Hansen has re-invented what pointillism is within his creative process and offers an inspirational and unique perspective on the re-purposing of material and thought all in one.
Hansen has spoken at TEDTalk 2013 Conference and the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, and has been featured on PBS, BBC, CNN, and the Discovery Channel. Phil was the official artist for 51st Grammy Awards and has had works commissioned by Disney, The Rockefeller Foundation, Skype, Mazda, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. His work is now on exhibit at KANEKO through August 24, 2019.
About Phil Hansen: Phil Hansen is an internationally recognized multimedia artist, speaker, author, and innovator known for crashing irreverently through conventional boundaries. He is widely known for his videos that document the creative process showing millions that art is action, not just result, and that restrictions can spur innovation rather than constrain it. Hansen is the founder of Goodbye Art Academy, providing high quality and free art education videos to teachers and students everywhere. For more information, please visit Philinthecircle.com.

Nizar Mamdani

Great Minds Series with UNMC’s Nizar Mamdani
Nizar and his wife Dr. Marsha Mamdani shared experiences with their innovative non-profit organization First Sight – whose mission is to provide a sustainable system of eye-care to impoverished regions of the world.
Our concept of light is inherently linked with vision – the human eye is one of the most utilized sensing organs. Just as eyeglasses are a product of science and design, Nizar Mamdani employs a multi-disciplinary creative approach to help the over 246 million people that suffer from poor vision worldwide.
Born and raised in Tanzania, East Africa, Nizar Mamdani has served as the Executive Director for International Healthcare programs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for over 15 years. Nizar’s extensive background in international financing and business led him to travel across the globe, where he became acutely aware of the tremendous need for effective solutions to provide eyeglasses for children and adults. The lack of access to optical care in many developing countries leads to a large portion of the population struggling with poor vision – which has a significant impact on a person’s everyday life, their families and the community at large. As a result of uncorrected visual impairment, millions of children are losing educational opportunities, adults are unable to work and families are pushed into poverty.
About First Sight
First Sight employs an elegantly simple, low-tech solution that immediately impacts those in need. First Sight kits contain all of the necessary tools to correct most vision problems – meaning poor vision can be easily diagnosed, measured and corrected by non-professions in just about any location in under 15 minutes. Patients are able to walk away with a new set of prescription glasses on the spot, empowering them with proper eyesight, allowing them to lead healthier and more productive lives. First Sight partners with local NGOs, philanthropic organizations, faith-based organizations, and school systems to make its glasses available to the neediest communities. Learn More ->
