MOVEMENT: III
Category: KANEKO Core Programs • MOVEMENT • Performances | Season: FORM
III is an evening-length, original performance by tbd. dance collective as part of The Movement Series at KANEKO.
The performance is a movement triptych, containing three, 15-minute sections of movement taking place in the upstairs gallery of the building. Movement within each section revolves spatially and conceptually around an installation or structure located within the room. The nature and quality of the movement were informed by various architectural aspects of each of the installations, drawing from shape, line, and form. The performance features original music by Gregory Elsasser and Alex Jacobsen. Choreography within the performance was developed collaboratively by the dancers within the group.
At the conclusion of each section, audience members may shift their focus to the area of the next section, physically move, or remain in their original location. If moving to a different area, please stay outside of the colored tape lines on the floor indicating the performance areas. Please note, that if moving to a new area, additional chairs will not be available for every audience member. Audience members may stand or sit on the floor. A few benches and chairs will be provided for those who need seating.

Monumental Works Closing Tours

Lifetime Achievements in Sculpture Public Tours
Sunday March 20th, will be a unique opportunity to enjoy our continued partnership with the International Sculpture Center as Stephan Grot, KANEKO Executive Director will be guiding two public tours of the space. This collection features globally-recognized works by monumental sculptural artists. Each of these artists is a Lifetime Achievement Award winner and has been recognized by the ISC. This exhibit and talk will illuminate each artist’s creative process as well as the craft and perseverance needed to master their materials and convey meaning in their sculptural work. Some of these themes and ideas will be discussed on Sunday, March 20th as Stephan Grot takes KANEKO guests through each of the pieces on display. Each talk will last approximately thirty minutes (1:30 and 2:30pm) and space is limited, so register today!
Monumental Works is an extension of the ISC’s littleSculpture Show and Art Sale that opened FORM in October 2021, alongside an exhibit of great works by 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award winner Jun Kaneko. By featuring other ISC Lifetime Achievement Award winners (Fletcher Benton, Jun Kaneko, Phillip King, William King, Manuel Neri, Arnoldo Pomodoro, Ursula Von Rydingsvard, Kiki Smith, James Surls, William G. Tucker, and Bernar Venet), this FORM exhibit enhances the historical impact and cultural significance of sculpture. It is also incredibly timely due to KANEKO’s relationship and role in the development of a new sculpture project at Omaha’s revitalized Gene Leahy Mall.
We see Monumental Works: Lifetime Achievement, as the connective tissue between KANEKO’s celebration of the ISC Lifetime Achievement Award in autumn of 2021, the reopening of the Gene Leahy Mall Sculptural Garden , and a more extensive commitment to bring monumental sculptural works of marked significance to the Omaha community.
This partnership between the Metropolitan and Convention Authority (MECA), KANEKO, and the International Sculpture Center, has secured 5 major sculptures for the Mall beginning in July 2022 for a period of three years. During this three-year period, KANEKO will develop and curate complimentary exhibits for each of the 5 sculptors featured at the Mall. At the conclusion of the three-year exhibit, 5 new sculptures will be selected and displayed and the exhibit timeline will begin anew.

A Monumental Task: Reclaiming Science in a Nation Banning Books and Denying a Pandemic
Featuring Dr. Ali Khan
The pandemic has tested our nation in ways we hoped to never experience. Social media and news reports depicting rising cases, new variants, and lockdowns have led to pandemic fatigue and the rise of misinformation and disinformation. COVID19 has unearthed the reality that we were not only unprepared for a worldwide pandemic, but often distrust scientific advancement. This talk will discuss the history of scientific distrust through topics such as banned books, evolution, sex education, climate change, and the anti-vaccine movement, while emphasizing the importance of reclaiming the role of science in our polarized society.
Ali Khan is Dean of the College of Public Health at UNMC & a former Assistant Surgeon General with the US Public Health Service. As Dean his focus is on health system & community-based health transformations. His vision is for the College to play an integral role in creating the next generation of Public Health Guardians.
Dr. Khan’s career has focused on health security, global health, & emerging infectious diseases. He completed a 23-year career as a senior director at the CDC where he was one of the main architects of their national health security. He continues to actively support global outbreak responses as a member of WHO & GOARN. Dr. Khan is the author of The Next Pandemic: On the Front Lines Against Humankind’s Gravest Dangers.
February’s Creative Morning’s theme is Monumental – When we call something monumental, we mean it as a matter of scale. Societies erect statues and build squares and dedicate memorials to prevent the past from being buried. These structures loom large and cast long shadows. They are meant to endure, to keep our ancestors alive in our memories, but sometimes they dwarf the living and engulf life itself.
.
What does it mean to think on a monumental timescale? To honor the past in such a way that it paves a path for the unfolding of the present? We have no way of knowing if our memories will outlive us, if they will manage to travel the vastness of space and time. But there are people in the future who will need our stories, stories capacious enough to hold all of our humanity. So what will you bear witness to? What will you leave behind when you’re gone?Learn more about CreativeMornings ⟶

Lifetime Achievements in Sculpture, a Celebration of Sculptural Artistry
In a continuing partnership with the International Sculpture Center, KANEKO presents a collection of globally-recognized works by monumental sculptural artists. This exhibit strives to illuminate each artist’s creative process as well as the craft and perseverance needed to master their materials and convey meaning in their sculptural work.
Monumental Works is an extension of the ISC’s littleSCULPTURE Show and Art Sale that opened FORM in October 2021, alongside an exhibit of great works by 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award winner Jun Kaneko. Community Impact in Omaha:
A plan is to place five large sculptures in the revitalized Gene Leahy Mall at The RiverFront. In addition, in coordination with KANEKO, MECA will plan activations around the five Gene Leahy Mall sculpture works.
We see this initial exhibit, Monumental Works, as connective tissue between KANEKO’s celebration of the ISC Lifetime Achievement Award in autumn of 2021, the development of this park project, and a more extensive commitment to bring monumental sculptural work of marked significance to the Omaha community.
