Join us at KANEKO on Thursday, November 21, for an exciting concert in the Omaha Chamber Music Society Eko Nova series, which provides opportunities to hear innovative contemporary musical works in diverse genres, styles, and forms. Inspired by KANEKO’s current exhibition of John Clement’s sculptures, this program will showcase the driving and dramatic power of minimalism, featuring pieces by composers Philip Glass and Steve Reich, iconic figures in late 20th century music. Their innovative approaches to sound and structure profoundly influence the history of modern music.
Minimalism in art is recognized for its propensity to strip away excess, as is evident in the Clement exhibition. In music – particularly from virtuosos like Steve Reich and Philip Glass – there is no romanticism in composition and no leisure in execution. The technical demands for musicians are exceptional, with performances unfolding along a razor’s edge; for the listener, the experience can be meditative and transformative, often facilitating heightened awareness and emotional depth.
Philip Glass’s String Quartet No. 5, composed in 1991, is Glass at his most expansive and cinematic, taking listeners through an exploration of emotions in five movements. Featuring rich harmonies and expressive melodies, the formal structure and range of the piece challenge traditional notions of classical chamber music.
Steve Reich’s Different Trains, composed in 1988, represents one of the most important works for string quartet from the last years of the 20th century. Reich uses his technique of tape looping to create a haunting and hypnotic tapestry upon which he tells the story of the Jewish people before, during, and after the events of World War II.
KANEKO’s “Open Space for Your Mind” provides opportunities for artists and innovators to explore new possibilities, and for audiences to think differently through encounters with creative endeavors. We’re proud to partner with the Omaha Chamber Music Society on this program featuring remarkable musicians performing some of the most inventive music of the past thirty-five years.
