The Culture of Costumes
An Opera Omaha and KANEKO inspired event.
You’re invited to an evening of crafted cocktails, culinary delights, opera and conversation, inspired by the creative collaboration between Opera Omaha and Jun Kaneko. Dress to express yourself and join us as we explore the culture and curation of costumes and the ways in which a wardrobe change can alter a character. Delicious food and drink inspired by operatic themes and Jun Kaneko will be provided by Ika San.

Poetry & Music

Fresh Ink.
Students from Nebraska and Iowa were invited to submit works of poetry on themes of creativity and community. Young alumni composers from the Luna Composition Lab project reviewed all the poems, and through a blind process selected pieces to set to music. These original compositions will be premiered at the Poetry & Music Concert as part of ONE Festival. Opera omaha’s Poetry & Music Project is produced in partnership with Nebraska Writers Collective and Luna Composition Lab.
About Opera Omaha: Opera Omaha, the only professional opera company in Nebraska, began in 1958 as the Omaha Civic Opera Society, a volunteer association, and with a tremendous community support became fully professional by 1970. Opera Omaha produces a season of original mainstage productions, presented in the historic Orpheum Theater, and smaller productions and musical events throughout the community. Opera Omaha is internationally known for its productions of eight world premieres and four American premieres of classical masterpieces and is highly regarded regionally for extensive community engagement and education programs. Opera Omaha’s recently completed 60th anniversary season saw the launch of the ONE Festival, an innovative new spring festival, and a groundbreaking civic action initiative, the Holland Community Opera Fellowship – work that is key to Opera Omaha’s ongoing transformation from a performing arts organization to a cultural resource for the community.

A Deconstruction of Opera in Motion.
In this original dance exhibition, the audience will journey into the thoughts of the performers and become part of their reality. A culmination of contemporary dance, live music, and projection mapping, For Research Only skews the lines of realistic and rehearsed theatre, giving viewers an unmasked and intimate glimpse into how a performance is made. A completely immersive experience, audience members will be woven into the content of the piece through movement, music, and conversation.

Project Designer: Meena MurugesanAbout Chris Emile: Christopher Emile is an active curator, dancer, choreographer, and educator. Mr. Emile co-founded the movement collective No)one in Los Angeles Art House (NOAH). Mr. Emile curates and manages all programming for NOAH which includes performances, collaborations with noted artists in the field (SAINT HERON, PHLEMUNS, and the Music Center) education opportunities, and other interactive events such as improv jams, film screenings, and discussions, and working with artists such as Solange Knowles, Kelela, Anderson Paak, Mayer Hawthorne, Tuxedo, Empress Of, and The Assembly Dance. Mr. Emile has performed with Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Morphoses, Luna Negra Dance Theater, and BODYTRAFFIC performing the works of master choreographers such as Nacho Duato, Idan Sharabi, Stijn Celis, Barak Marshall, and Gustavo Ramirez Sansano. Mr. Emile also frequently teaches at universities such as CalArts, Loyola Marymount University, Pomona College, and UC Irvine.

Proving Up: Music & Poetry Project
Saturday April 21 | 4 PMA public concert which featured new works by emerging Omaha composers inspired by student poetry on themes from Proving Up. Opera Omaha invited K-12 Students from Nebraska and Iowa to submit works of poetry on themes tied to Opera Omaha’s world premiere of the opera Proving Up by Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek. We received 32 poems from 28 writers, on the themes of The American Dream, Pioneers and Homesteaders, Ancestry and Lineage, and Journey to Nebraska. Local composers reviewed all the poems, and selected eight pieces to set to music. The concert featured these original compositions.

Prelude Talks
Prelude talks occured prior to each mainstage production. These 20-minute talks gave audiences extra insight into the opera they were about the experience with information about the story, music, history and more.Post-Show Talkbacks
Talkbacks invited the audience to explore themes and insights from the performance with members of the cast and/or artistic team as a forum for conversation and discussion. Talkbacks were with the cast and artistic team for all Proving Up performances.
