Nicholas P. Konen

Board Member

Nick studied marketing, finance, and economics in college, but his lifelong passion for the arts has always shaped his perspective. After more than 20 years in marketing leadership roles, he now serves as Vice President, Director of Civic Architecture at HDR, where he leads strategic planning and business development to advance the firm’s civic architecture program globally.

Art remains a major influence in Nick’s life—he paints and draws in his spare time—and his early experiences learning the etiquette of golf and working in his family’s grocery business instilled values of discipline, integrity, and community. Throughout his career, he has successfully balanced creativity with business logic and common sense, guided by the principle: “Be vested in your community, explore new ideas, and always do the right thing for the project and client.”

Dedicated to HDR’s civic practice, Nick partners with architecture studios across the U.S. and Canada to strengthen community connections and deliver meaningful projects. With a comprehensive understanding of the project lifecycle, he excels at developing strategies, identifying key drivers, and assembling teams to achieve client goals. His ability to build networks, foster enduring relationships, and create connections has been central to his success.

Active in his community, Nick serves as a Board Member for the YMCA of Greater Omaha and KANEKO and as an Executive Committee Member at ULI Nebraska. His previous volunteer work includes serving on the HDR Foundation Grant Committee, as an Omaha Symphony Governing Member, with First Tee of Omaha, and on the Joslyn Art Museum Board of Governors, Ex-Officio.

Nick is married to Nickie Konen and they have two children.
